Gordon Owen was involved with a number of soup run projects around London during the 70's, 80's, 90's & Millennium + with Crisis Open Christmas/Advice Centre/Extension Shelter; and previously was pro-actively involved with the Parish of East Ham Night Shelter at St Bart's Church & Centre, London for over 10 years and Senior Co-Ordinator for a significant amount of this time.

The Night Shelter was part of a cluster of ecumenical venues which collectively formed the Newham Night Shelter, operating during the winter season annually

(November to March). An umbrella organisation is currently striving towards a permanent Night Shelter in the Borough.

The Parable of the Good Samaritan

On one occasion an expert in the law stood up to test Jesus. Teacher, he asked, what must I do to inherit eternal life?

What is written in the Law? he replied. How do you read it?

He answered: Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind; and, Love your neighbour as yourself.

You have answered correctly, Jesus replied. Do this and you will live.

But he wanted to justify himself, so he asked Jesus, And who is my neighbour?

In reply Jesus said: A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, when he fell into the hands of robbers. They stripped him of his clothes, beat him and went away, leaving him half dead. A priest happened to be going down the same road, and when he saw the man, he passed by on the other side. So too, a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. But a Samaritan, as he travelled, came where the man was; and when he saw him, he took pity on him. He went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he put the man on his own donkey, took him to an inn and took care of him. The next day he took out two silver coins and gave them to the innkeeper. Look after him, he said, and when I return, I will reimburse you for any extra expense you may have.

Which of these three do you think was a neighbour to the man who fell into the hands of robbers?

The expert in the law replied, The one who had mercy on him.

Donations Produce Goods Night Shelters:

Enquiries are annually received about produce and goods that come to hand each winter for homeless, especially through such sources as ÒHarvest FestivalÓ via Churches. Such goods are always valued and welcomed by groups who provide for homeless/rough sleepers.

We have received enquiries about this yet again. We can positively direct sources to locations where goods/food can be directed for the homeless during the winter season. To give an indication of the type of things generally needed a list is given below for guidance:-

Food: Non-perishable foods & Items, e.g. tins of vegetables, carrots, soups, fruit, potatoes; custard; rice pudding; sugar; tea; coffee; powder milk.

A word about certain tin foods: Such is the generosity of people night shelters find themselves with far too many tins of certain items surplus at the end of each season, i.e. Baked Beans, and tin Tomatoes. Equally, the same applies to the sheer volume of clothing, (with storage limitation), except for the type of items indicated below. Whilst reluctant to say please exclude these items for want of suddenly Ônone arrivingÕ, please help by reducing contributions of large quantities of these items.

Fresh foods & Items, e.g. Ready pealed/baked/coquettes potatoes; chicken, (or other easy to cook meats); peas, mixed vegetables; cereals; apple & other deserts; sources; custard powder; sugar; washing-up liquid; food surface cleaning liquid; J-cloths; ÔlongÕ matches; long lighting tapers; large tin foil; freezer bags.

Goods: Trousers/jeans, dresses/tops for women; warm ladies & gents coats/jackets; ladies & gents pants; socks; soap; tooth brushes; tooth paste; disposable razors; shaving cream; tea-towels; washing towels; face flannels; toiletries generally; disposable cups, plates & cutlery; ladies & gents coats; first-aid items. Blankets & toilet rolls are also needed. THANK YOU!

Saint Giles Patron Saint of the Homeless

(Also known as Aegidus; Egidio Memorial)

Profile: Born a wealthy noble. When his parents died, he used his fortune to help the poor. Miracle worker. To avoid followers and adulation, he left Greece c.683 for France where he lived as a hermit in a cave in the diocese of Nimes, a cave whose mouth was guarded by a thick thorn bush, and a lifestyle so impoverished that, legend says, God sent a hind to him to nourish him with her milk.

One day after he had lived there for several years in meditation, a royal hunting party chased the hind into Giles' cave. One hunter shot an arrow into the thorn bush, hoping to hit the deer, but hit Giles in the leg instead, crippling him. The king sent doctors to care for saint's wound, and though Giles begged to be left alone, the king came often to see him.

From this his fame as sage and miracle worker spread, and would-be followers gathered near the cave. The French king, because of his admiration, built the monastery of Saint Gilles du Gard for these followers, and Giles became its first abbot, establishing his own discipline there. A small town grew up around the monastery. Upon Giles' death, his grave became a shrine and place of pilgrimage; the monastery later became a Benedictine house.

The combination of the town, monastery, shrine and pilgrims led to many handicapped beggars hoping for alms; this and Giles' insistence that he wished to live outside the walls of the city, and his own damaged leg, led to his patronage of beggars, and to cripples since begging was the only source of income for many. Hospitals and safe houses for the poor, crippled, and leprous were constructed in England and Scotland, and were built so cripples could reach them easily. On their passage to Tyburn for execution, convicts were allowed to stop at Saint Giles Hospital where they were presented with a bowl of ale called Saint Giles' Bowl, thereof to drink at their pleasure, as their last refreshing in this life. Once in Scotland during the seventeenth century his relics were stolen from a church and a great riot occurred.

In Spain, shepherds consider Giles the protector of rams. It was formerly the custom to wash the rams and colour their wool a bright shade on Giles feast day, tie lighted candles to their horns, and bring the animals down the mountain paths to the chapels and churches to have them blessed. Among the Basques, the shepherds come down from the Pyrenees on 1st September, attired in full costume, sheepskin coats, staves, and crooks, to attend Mass with their best rams, an event that marks the beginning of autumn festivals, marked by processions and dancing in the fields.
